Within the concept of a portrait, there exists the inner personality, soul or spirit of a person that is encased in its physical form. That form barely suggests what lies beneath the surface. A sparkle of the eye or a relaxed smile gives us clues; however, added props provide more information to the sitter’s status. After doing several of my own hand portraits, I have been drawn to the idea of painting  hand portraits for others. The sitter’s hand is a prop for an object that symbolizes a significant idea, emotion or concept of the sitter’s choosing. Below are examples of the work I have completed.
